eSIM

For most visitors with a reasonably modern phone, an eSIM is now the simplest option — set up entirely online before you travel, active the moment you land, no physical shop visit or swapping a physical card required. Several providers sell Spain-specific or Europe-wide eSIM data plans; prices are generally competitive with local physical SIMs for short trips.

Reality check: Confirm your specific phone model and carrier actually support eSIM and aren't locked before relying on this — not all phones do, particularly older or carrier-locked devices.

Local physical SIM

Spanish carriers (Vodafone, Orange, Movistar, and budget brands like Lebara or Digi) sell prepaid SIMs at airport kiosks, phone shops, and some convenience stores. Usually cheaper per gigabyte than an eSIM for longer stays, but requires an unlocked phone and a bit more setup effort — worth it if you're staying more than a week or two.

International roaming

Depending on your home carrier and plan, roaming in the EU may already be included or available as an add-on — worth checking before you leave, since for some plans (especially EU-based ones) it's genuinely the simplest option with zero setup needed. For others, roaming charges remain expensive enough that a local SIM or eSIM is clearly cheaper.

How to choose

  • Short trip, modern phone: eSIM — least hassle, competitive pricing.
  • Longer stay, unlocked phone: local physical SIM — usually cheapest per gigabyte.
  • Roaming already included in your plan: just use that — no reason to complicate it.
Tip: Wi-Fi is widely available in cafés, hotels, and many public spaces in Barcelona — if you're comfortable being offline occasionally, you may need less mobile data than you'd first assume.
